If that is true, then the beginning of our knowledge is our school system. I have spent the last two years engaged, thanks to my daughter, in the Clark County School District. Several board members are up for re-election this year, and I am writing to review my experience with them. I do not necessarily recommend changing any of the board members, I think they all have their strengths and weaknesses, and since the voters have passed the term limits laws here in Nevada, I think change will happen, but I am not going to be involved in the schools any more to watch the kind of shi(f)t that is going to happen in our schools to make that change for the better.

Trustees Ruth Johnson, Mary Beth Scow and Terri Janison are up for reelection. While I do not know yet if I am going to vote for Ruth Johnson, my zoned trustee, I have not been presented with a better candidate, and for the most part, I do know that Trustee Johnson is diligent and very thorough in the areas she is concerned about, which areas seem to be infrastructure (of the external nature). I believe she is a bit naive and blind in her trust the current administration and system presently in place. There is so much that needs to be changed in the current administration, as, based on my experience I think it is the Superintendent and all the decision makers in the District's Administration that is where the change needs to be made. Ultimately, the Board is responsible for the Administration of the School District, and that is not lost on me, but I believe a major change in the make-up of the Board right now would be more detrimental than good. A major change of the Superintendent and his Administrative staff, now that would be helpful!

Shirley Barber is retiring so her seat is open for a new person and a new voice to come onto the Board and perhaps that is where the fire will be inserted to change the Administration for the better. Obviously, being one of the worst school districts in America in one of the worst states for education they cannot help but get better.

If you have children and are considering the public schools here in Clark County, my advice, don't do it unless you plan to be an ACTIVE VOICE for your child (and hence all children) and push the District and its Board to become more aware of our shifting reality and greater consciousness. They need the help that way. If you do not want to be a voice, do not enroll your child in Clark County School District, the climate is not safe for active, creative and sensitive children. - elaine , posted 08/01/08
