I hate it, it looks like a hospital where is the funk and why should I keep this going it sucks to come to Tribe anymore. I find myself using it less and less. I'm thinking very seriously of dumping the tribe or at the very least staying away from it and just letting it stay as is. Yuck! I cannot even stand to look at all this whiteness and sterile crap it hurts.

Dressing up the old dead horse, eh?
I'm with the school of thought that says the recent tribe changes are just a smoke screen to all the 'selling out' cr@p that has been going on lately. It's hard to blame just tribe though when so many of us are enabling them through continued use of their site. Who knows what they are doing with our information? For that matter who knows what OTHER groups with our information is doing with it? My solution? Remain as ambiguous as possible.

the old one wasnt so hot either

i personally felt that the old page had some really difficult navigation quirks to it and it wasnt really that easy to navigate until you trial-& errored your way through. more of the same.
nowdays, the wway the web comes through dynamic content management, therre is no reason that we shouldnt be able to change the way the skin look s to us as individual users, in the same manner as the way we can change the backgrounds on our user profiles.
simple as that.

This is insane and straight up disrespectful to the loyal users who made Tribe so unique and cool. It is like forcing someone to walk around wearing a huge label on their chest like Calvin Klien or something. Shame on them, whom ever they are. YUCK! Howard Johnson aesthetic!
I feel like I just walked into my favorite underground warehouse party and discovered that they'd added red vinyl booths and linoleum floors to neaten things up for some kind of conference of Midwestern McCompany CEO's... And they shifted everything 20 degrees to the left so that we can't find anything...I don't like it at all. Are they trying to keep up with mainstream sites like Friendster? Tribe-- don't be like Michael Jackson
Tribe.com, I'm gonna try to be constructive here. So lemme break it down like this...

Old look:
Events for example:
I used to be able to look up what events My Friends had posted for Tonight.

New look:
Now I have to dig through Everything Everyone has posted for a Two Week Period.

To summarize:
I think that the convience of the old look was much more valuable to me than the added sexyiness of the new site.

And it isn't even that sexy.

I don't need a sexy site.

For god sake man! Leave the being sexy to the professionals. There are many fine users of this site who are extremely sexy. I dare say MUCH sexier than you-- tribe.

You know it's kinda sad really. You were good enough allready. But then you got all big and your ego grew faster than you were ready for, so then you got insecure. But this is like getting a really bad nose job to make yourself feel better.

You know who else did that...

bad look but... is that the big issue with tribe these days?
Is this the tribalization of the mainstream or the mainstreaming of the tribe?

the conspiracy theorist in me feels a smoke screen.... maybe they have us distracted by all this eshetic crap while they sell our personel info to the highest bidder... We give these corporate bastards too much power just by using thier service and yet the convienience it provides eggs us on. By giving us google they gave us an oracle... but in return we gave them our questions.... the only thing more valuable to the establishment than information is a flag to which of it is of interest. The corporation so happily provides this wonderful tribe.net service, allows us to catalyse our little revolution through networking and publicity. They also track our interests and associations, even our planning and organization is all documented and data searchable on line....

before you worry about how it looks ask yourselves this question....

is this service for us?

or for THEM... - Spoon , posted 01/29/06

hurts my eyes
i find the new design hurts my eyes, personally i hate white backgrounds. I often use a deep, black, grey or muted jewel-tone colour behind text and find it much easier to read.

Tribe admins, do you actually sit in front of pure white screens all day? if so it has warped your minds.

I don't think the new design is 100% bad, but it really does generate a vaccuum.

give us the option to switch to a black background-type navigation, just like the ones available for my profile (could you come up with some new designs for those while you're selling my screen real estate?)

thew new look is heinous and the muppet twins of satan want to haunt my dreams
ok, looks like they got the wording right on this one. one star = heave and five stars = great look...

so i'm thinking it's heave. the muppets heaving pretty much says it all. and what's with muppets anyway? do the TOU say we should be eighteen to participate? if so, why the little muppet kids representing members?

the new changes are disturbing, but we're creating a new world within it. so fuck it... we'll endure and, as the muppets once famously sang, "hope that somethin' better comes along..."

in the meantime, i raise a glass, not to the new look or the two red headed muppet step-twins of satan, but rather, TO US!!! for being so bright, vibrant and beautiful! - Shady , posted 01/27/06

depending on what side of that mirror you glance from everything can be either or...
funny I haven't given much attention to the change of style on this website. it's effect and function is what interests me. just another pretext to exercise our ability to connect, confirm and create synchronicity and of course evolve telepathy.
speaking of which as a result of that connection here I found myself in this stream of intensley opinionated perspectives about the "face" that this corporate outlet has...
unable to escape the power of collective focus and attention I say YES to everything.
we are all right about everything, evil-live, many ways , all ways

Tribe dump current mgmt policy, . . . or all supercool beings will no doubt shortly be vacating. Doesn't Tribe remember its origins? ==> Mass emigration from Friendster when they started getting corporate & clean, killing off fakesters? DUH.

The old look was dense, not terribly esthetic, but totally functional. The extra white space is nice, but excessive.

The logo graphics are cheesy, toss 'em. Why not have a Tribe town council? Wishful thinking, I suppose. . .

Yep, there are plenty of open source programmers out there who can take everything they've learned from these examples and do it better, COOP-style. Community owned. . .

it was never that good
Everyone is complaining about the change. I feel it is hard to change after we all got used to the other look, but i feel the other look wasn't that good either. It wasn't very managable at first but once i got using it i figured it out. I rather like some of the aspects of the new look while i dislike others. We have had ad space for a while so thats not new. Over all it is the same. I dont feel like it is corporate moving in. We are just growing so many in numbers that Tribe needs to set itself up to be able to grow and not waste energy uploading wastful info everytime someone logs in. For reals though tribe was never the best online networking site visually or functionally. It is the people that use this site that make it what it is. So if people want to switch it up then so be it but we are all here so deal with it. A new year, a new day, a new tribe. - Bosque , posted 01/26/06

New conscious social network premiering February 2nd!
Just wanted to let everyone know that we have been working hard on a new conscious social network, and will be ready to unveil the beta on February 2nd.

It is being created by me and my nonprofit organization, Living Paradise, and will not have a hidden corporate agenda behind it. It is being created by people like us, for people like us, as well as to introduce tribal concepts of harmony and sustainability to a larger audience.

If you would like to be notified the moment it goes live, and perhaps get a chance to help us test it out before then, please head over to www.livingparadise.org and sign up for our newletter.

And, if you are a php programmer or developer, especially with Drupal experience, and you would be interested in becoming a part of our team, please contact me either here or at www.livingparadise.org.

Keep the faith! We are changing the world, one moment at at time.

peace and much love,

PEPSI CEO's feeding people Kaaakaaaaa......
As everyone here seems to be feeling that this new "look" sucks the big one, I don't understand why they haven't switched it back!?!?!?!?! Well I do understand, I guess as all of us are starting to understand that yup they're on to us....Damn! Wade or whomever is listening, you guys are a bunch of main stream, no good, money hungry, but heads! Sorry, I don't like calling people names but come on now. Anyway, I could get over the fact that it looks like Kaaakaaaa, but when it comes to navigating the site it really is a mess! IT was so much simpler when you could just log in and see everything happenin on one page, where's the negative star rating??? I'm sure our overall use of the site has gone down, I know my use has....ANyways fix it already you PEPSI drinking Wallmart shopping pukes! - Geno , posted 01/26/06

It's too bad . . .
. . . that the rating system only goes to 1. There should be some negative numbers for this "new" look. When there is a good alternative to Tribe, I'm moving there. I just hope (suggest) that is such an alternative is created that it be owned cooperatively by the members. That way there will be no need to pander to the advertising dollars by creating a site that is difficult to use and ugly simply to create more real estate for advertisers and forcing more click-throughs to get where you want to get to so that more ads need to be seen per session. - *Richard , posted 01/26/06

The Mark of the Beast
This is a supreme illustration of capitalistic power dynamics. On one hand you want the people who create fantastic tools to be supported, but on the other hand we need to look at what our support is giving the creators of Tribe.

Tribe is not a charitable organization, or an open source hobbyist site. It is a business that makes its money from harvesting our attenetion and selling pieces of it for profit. Our time is their money. We had some opportunity to be more involved in the support of this system when adds were first generated mostly by users. I have not seen a user generated ad in a long time, unless the CEO of Monster.com is now a user.

What I hope our artist networks learn from this is that in order to sustain supreme tools for networking and communication, we need to participate with more than data. We need to feed the systems that feed us. Unfortunately, we may have reached a point where our food is not what this system is hungry for.

Internet Gentrification is upon us my friends. Let's not do this again. - Osiris , posted 01/26/06

now that i've read about the new CEO i hate it even more...
wow. it took me this long to sift through it all and see what is really behind all this. i am saddened and appalled. i don't want those corporate freaks to know what i think on some of my most intimate subjects... not that some weren't here all along but now its so damn obvious. hell, they probably have plans to sell all our posts as market research.

eeeewww. we need a new site run by folks who won't sell it out. this site has led to many amazing things in my life, truly unbelieveable, and the people i have met here are incredible. but i can't support a site run by someone who specializes in corporate control. more co-opting of sub-culture is all this is.

aside from that, the new design totally sucks and is difficult to navigate. it is sterile and uninviting. - ra , posted 01/26/06

exodus... movement of jah people...
“Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The trouble-makers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status-quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify, or vilify them. But the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do."

~ Apple Computers, from "Think Different" Advertisement

okay... so we have this social network we've been using for a long time and we've gotten pretty comfy with it, i know i have... this site has changed my life... but i definitely am not happy with the direction its going.

take, for example, the CEO of tribe.net now, a gentleman by the name of Jan Gullett:

www.zoominfo.com/Search/Pe...etail.aspx

**he was vice president and general manager of PEPSI.**
**he has worked for SARA LEE and PROCTER & GAMBLE.**

what are they *DOING*?!

quote: "We’ve had a nice compound annual growth rate for the last year now. It just remains to be seen how fast we can step on the accelerator."

i can hear his thoughts... "hmmm, let's redesign the site so it looks slick and leaves lots more room for advertising, and then make everything hard to find so they have to click through lots of pages and we get paid for each one, yeah!"

well... i'm going to keep my tribe.net account... but i'm also going to test the waters, so to speak.

I just signed up for Tribe.net two days before the change. My first impression was, Hey this feels real comfortable and I won't mind hanging out here. Then...
It all changed and I am finding my way around. I agree with everyone else, even though I never got accustomed to the old ways, the feel changed to something not as comfortable.
However, it still seems like a great place to network and share with people.
My vote would be to go back to the old design. This one seems much too, Shopping Mall, in feel. Thanks to all the wonderful people on this site for setting the vibe and wanting to keep it. - Xaliman , posted 01/25/06

i liked the old version simply cause the navigation was tight! also, too much 'white space' and these red, white and blue colors on the new version make my eyes hurt, any web designer should know this is a no no. adding to the injustice is the clinical look and feel that does not suit what 'tribe' is.

that we now have
corporate,

controlled
by people who claim,
in cleverly contructed campaigns
to be ethically and intellectually
somehow
so superior
that their motivation
should not even be questioned, to say nothing of
being debated...
for example,
individuals or groups could call themselves "good"
Americans and/or
Christians...
yet, when their
behavior and what they actually say,
is examined, in any detail at all,
they are revealed to have absolutely none
of the functioning qualities or ethics
connected with what they claim to be...is this to be the
true fate and colors

where did everybody go?

a question tribe.net will likely be asking themselves in the weeks to come.

i have to say i am accustomed to users complaining about changes on a website. it's the norm i've come to accept that folks very often don't like change.. even on a free to use website.. and usually it is me defending the changes which was my first reaction here.

but after trying to use this "new look" for a few days now i am becoming very aware that it's not just me being slow to adjust. the navigation has become so poor that i spend more time trying to figure out where i want to go than actually doing anything here.

i wonder if it has anything to do with the new CEO ?
onlinepersonalswatch.typepad.com/n...ml

hats off to tribe.net for showing the users the potential of online social networks.
too bad they dropped the ball here..

in a way it's good tho as it will only promote the next tribe.net phenomenna to do a better job.

And of course they even censor that. THe look is awful, red in design theory is used to instight hunger, anger, and fear. Is that the new agenda?! Luckily I have Fire Fox and can block the shitty ads but man a new low. Did they not do the market research to establish that the majority of us are Burners and fucking hate advertisments?

Why change the color? Why not change the way it dumps you off the sight if you don't type a fast enough response to a post? Or use all the money they spent on the supposed upgrade (more like a down grade poindexter) to lobby against the kind of christian 4th riech bull shit that made them have to censor shit in the first place.

Either way I am pretty much done with this shit. Tell Wade the people put his pink slip in the fucking mail. - Mattress , posted 01/25/06

Facing REALITY
WHY DO WE CONFORM TO USING THIS? I'm considering leaving. I've barely used the internet in this life, and I am learning about why. Our tribe is interesting. We celebrate our love for the Earth as we hop on and off of FOSSIL FUEL guzzling AIRPLANES, VEHICLES, ETCETERA........as we utilize the latest high tech computers and music gear....etcetera. ARE WE GROUNDED? Of course, positive INTENTION is a powerfull force...although...As far as I can see, there are few humans alive at this time who are Really Grounded. I know that I have alot to learn & teach about really seriously grounding. We know that our potential is unlimited...so let's support one another with making best use of our STRONG abilities. - amy , posted 01/25/06

I don't like it either. Not even a choice to give no star???
There are so many talented people in the community at large who do beautiful web work. This site could have a gorgeous look and feel, while still being simple and easy to navigate. I agree that simplicity is great, but changing the interface the way it has been, does not make it more simple to use, let alone appealing to look at! I'm am not suprised so many people want to leave the site.
If I had any back-around in web design, I would give more specific ideas. I will say this: Go back to the drawing board, get the users of the site involved, utilize the network of artists YOU have created, and get feedback BEFORE you change everything around. And if you want red so badly, give it some balancing colours to lesson the intensity.
I can't help notice how much my eyes are continually wondering over to the AOL add to the right of the page on which I am typing.... Could that be because everything else is insanely white! Forcing that attention by having it be the only colouful thing on the page does not support tribal culture, it supports consumer culture. a good exaple of simple tricks of the comsumer world...How telling.
Let's stick together on this, stick around and get a better tribe. net out of the whole fiasco. - Ariel , posted 01/24/06

I don't mind the look of the top of the page, but functionality has been completely thrown out the window. I was just starting to really enjoy what tribe has to offer, now I just come here to see if I have any messages, and then leave right away. design suicide
i'm into icons, and i'm into interfaces. after all, the future of the net is about user connections and simplicity. i feel bad for the designer of this new look. their pain could have been avoided with a really smart response to the beta-test (i.e. people hate it...don't use it). it's clear that nearly everyone dislikes it in some range of the spectrum from mild to extreme agony. what baffles me is how it ever got approved. all i can imagine is that the people who are running the site don't really care what the users actually think. this thread is pretty revealing no? perhaps tribe.net admin should really think about the upcoming waves of user network sites and ask themselves if they really want to lose users because of a stupid design choice.

Introducing...The new corporate Tribe.net
Yes, I agree with other posts declaring that this new look is extremely bland,
business/corporate-like & generally "unfunky" (hey, i like that word).
This a major step backwords for Tribe.net.
I don't even want to be on this anymore with the new site.
Why change all the navigation just when we're all used to the old one?

Please try harder to keep this site uber-funky, colorful, & fun.

uncool for a number of reasons
The original design worked despite the overtly functional colors
due to it's formless nature. Besides the red text in the upper left
every design element was basically it's more efficient way
to create the functionality in the form of the web medium.

Having no symbols other than words,
it was widely accessible to many aesthetics and
cultural paradigms.

By creating corporate symbols,
propogating the red
the visual paradigm has become
conditioned by a particular theme
which most people not only don't relate to
they despise as the vibrations reflects the very corporate culture
this site acts as a counterbalance to.

People want to identify with the site,
they must if they're going to build their communities here
and conditioning the insitution with narrow cultural symbols
is like trying to slap adidas logos on tribal gear...

Tribe.net should consider having the option of skins.

Also dramatically changing the positions of the
interface that people had become a customed to
using is to water frusteration.

'Research' into design is one thing,
but searching our collective soul
from the inside out is the only way
to design visual systems
that the collective will identify with.

Liberate the visual symbology or lose it...
these discoordant symbols
do more harm to the flow
than you may realize. - phong , posted 01/20/06

I like the circles at the top, but I STRONGLY suggest a balance of colours, perhaps even the primaries (blue, yellow & red).
